idtc.2011@gmail.com<\/a><\/p>\nThe Iran Democratic Transition Conference II: “Remembering Neda, the symbol of Freedom and Democracy in Iran”<\/strong>\u00a0will take place on the anniversary of the day her life was brutally taken as she was peacefully participating in a people’s march in Tehran, giving rise to what has since become known as The Iranian Green Movement. \u00a0Since then, the Movement has inspired other young people in undemocratic nations in the region, who are rising up to the call for freedom.\u00a0 This conference will examine the dynamics of the Green Movement, the role of secularism versus religion in the political life of Iran; the question of religious freedom in an Islamic society; the role of the media; and the implications of the Green Movement for U.S. policy.<\/p>\nSpeakers<\/strong>:\u00a0Dr. Kenneth Katzman<\/strong>, Senior Middle East Specialist, U.S. Congressional Research Service; Mojtaba Vahedi,<\/strong>\u00a0spokesman for Mehdi Karubi;\u00a0Prince Reza Pahlavi<\/strong>, son of the late Shah of Iran;\u00a0Amir Abbas Fakhravar,<\/strong>Secretary General of Confederation of Iranian Students;\u00a0Dr. Noradin Pirmoazen<\/strong>, former member of Iranian parliament;\u00a0Ramin Asgard,<\/strong>\u00a0Director of VOA Persian Service;\u00a0Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh<\/strong>, Director of the London-based Center for Arab and Iranian Studies;\u00a0Caspian Makan<\/strong>, Neda’s fianc\u00e9e;\u00a0Dr. Walid Phares,<\/strong>\u00a0Middle East scholar;\u00a0Shayan Aryan<\/strong>, member of Board of Directors for the Constitutional Monarchy Party;\u00a0Seyed Mohammad Hosseini<\/strong>, comedian and satire writer;\u00a0Dr. Michael Waller<\/strong>, Annenberg Professor of International Communication at the Institute of World Politics;\u00a0Amir Shadjareh<\/strong>, President of Pars International TV;\u00a0Zia Atabay<\/strong>, founder and president of National Iranian Television in Los Angeles;\u00a0Hojatol-Islam Valmoslemin Mohammad Hedayati<\/strong>, Secretary General of Rasam, an organization of clerics in Qom and abroad;\u00a0Amir Golalipour<\/strong>, executive member, Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s presidential election campaign;\u00a0Farhad Sabetan<\/strong>, Bahai community spokesperson;\u00a0Nahid Kalhori<\/strong>, executive director of Confederation of Iranian Students; and others.<\/p>\nThis event follows the highly successful conference held at the George Washington University and the U.S. Capitol in January, 2011. \u00a0Participants included\u00a0Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Congressman Ted Deutch (D-FL),\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ),\u00a0<\/strong>as well as\u00a0<\/strong>representatives from\u00a0the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI).<\/strong>\u00a0 The conference engaged students, non-governmental organizations, academics, and others, both inside and outside Iran, for the purpose of contributing to a better global understanding of the needs and desires of the Iranian people as they seek greater liberty of expression and political engagement.
